Wartburg Castle in Eisenach

Overlooking the Thuringian town of Eisenach, Wartburg Castle has ties to German history like almost no other castle in the country. Its outstanding cultural and historical importance led UNESCO to name it a “World Heritage site” in 1999.

The west side of Wartburg Castle is shown here along with the great hall, keep and Elisabethgang (St. Elisabeth Passage). The stone walls of the buildings are plastered towards the front part of the view; further to the south are rough stone walls, seen towering over rugged cliffs.

The Nuremberg bay window was installed in the 19th century, in the gable end of the so-called Vogtei (“bailiwick”) at Wartburg Castle. The window features a wood frame with four crown glass panes. A steep path to the right of the building leads to a second courtyard.

A look into the first courtyard, the so-called forecourt at Wartburg Castle, reveals the Vogtei (“bailiwick”) in the north part of the castle complex. The first floor of that building contains the Lutherstube or “Luther Room”, the authentic site where Martin Luther worked.

A shuttle service is available to take visitors from visitor parking to the castle. The walk takes approximately 10 minutes.

Barrier-free access and accessible content for all visitors
Wartburg Castle is a protected monument and unfortunately not barrier-free.

Guided tours

Group tours (max. 25 people): € 75 plus the price of admission
Special tours outside of the opening hours are available upon request

Due to the expected increase in the number of visitors, tour operators are requested to make early bookings for tour groups. Cancellations up to 10 days before the reserved date will be refunded in full.

Audio guides
Regular admission prices entitle visitors to a self-guided tour of Wartburg Castle and of the exhibition with an audio guide. The audio guide is included in the admission price and comes complete with three different tours available in the following languages:
